February 10, 2015
A year has passed since I became the CEO of Memorial Medical Center. In retrospect, the hospital has gone through a tremendous amount of change over a relatively short time. Change is never easy, but if we stay the course, the results will establish MMC as the regional healthcare system of choice. I personally want to thank every employee and our stellar leadership team and Board for their role in carrying out our mission this year. We are growing our clinical staff and upgrading our technology to provide the highest quality healthcare in southern New Mexico. At the same time, we are remodeling our facility to provide a fresh, modern environment for our physicians and their patients. The future is very bright for MMC.
Private Rooms Now at MMC
For the first time in history, MMC now has private rooms for every patient (with the exception of our Behavioral Health and Pediatric units). During 2015, we will be working on modernizing our rooms. We want to make MMC the first choice for physicians and their patients.
Another UNM Cancer Center Oncologist Joins MMC Cancer Program
We are very pleased to welcome an exceptional physician to our Cancer Center. Dr. Ramadevi Medavarapu is a medical oncologist, fellowship trained in Hematology and Oncology at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY. Dr. Rama, as she calls herself, joins Dr. Cherie Hayostek and Dr. William Adler as the third UNM Cancer Center physician to join the MMC Cancer Center staff and the Las Cruces community. UNMCC is one of only 68 NCI designated cancer centers in the nation. We are honored to be affiliated with this exceptional organization and extraordinarily proud to offer this quality of cancer care to our community, right here at home.
Pediatric Hospitalist Joins MMC
Dr. Jenifer Lichtenfels has joined MMC as our new Pediatric hospitalist. Dr. Lichtenfels brings years of experience in Neonatal Special Care as well as a broad spectrum of care for patients under age 21. She is a key addition to an already stellar staff as we reach Level III NICU status.
Dr. Hernandez Performs Region’s First
Bladeless Cataract Surgery at HealthPlex
On Wednesday, December 3rd Dr. Edward Hernandez (center) performed the region’s first bladeless laser cataract surgery at the MMC HealthPlex, and several more that same day. The surgeries were a great success! Dr. Richard Mohammed (right) will soon complete his training on this exceptionally accurate new equipment.
Five Labor and Delivery Nurses Earn IBLCE Certification
The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners® credential is a mark of excellence in the lactation field. IBCLE is the global authority that determines the knowledge of practitioners in lactation and breastfeeding care. Five of MMC’s Labor and Delivery nurses have achieved certification in this year’s class. These include (from left to right):
- Tracy Alsup BSN, IBCLC
- Genoveva Soto RN, IBCLC
- Deborah Stafford RNC, IBCLC
- Denise Morales BSN, IBCLC
- Andrea Cathey BSN, IBCLC
IBCLE exam candidates must complete 90 hours of education about lactation and breastfeeding prior to applying for the exam. This is a stellar achievement for each of these employees! We appreciate the efforts they have made to make Mom and baby care the best it can be at MMC.
MMC Celebrates Employees with Holiday Pies and a Visit from Santa
Thanksgiving dinner for each employee included a pie from MMC this year. And, Santa made a visit to have breakfast with MMC employees and their families on Saturday, December 13th. The holiday season is a time of gratitude and sharing. We are thankful for each employee at MMC and for the community we are privileged to serve.
Welcome New Providers and Physicians
We are happy to announce that several new providers have joined MMC’s medical staff over the last month. Please join me in welcoming the following physicians:
- Patrick Garcia, CNP, Emergent Medical Associates
- Jenifer Lichtenfels, MD, Pediatric Hospitalist
- Ramadevi Medavarapu, MD, Medical Oncologist
- Elizabeth Portugal, Certified Nurse Midwife, joined First Step
- Susann Ravessoud, FNP, Bone and Joint Center of Southern New Mexico

In closing, we have great things to look forward at Memorial Medical Center. Our legacy of care for this community is the foundation we are building on as we bring new services, better technology and high quality healthcare providers into this region. Our guiding principles will always be safety, quality and compassion as we become the first choice for healthcare in our region. We wish you and your family happy holidays and a prosperous and healthy new year.
