Memorial Medical Center Now Offering New Procedure For Hypertension

June 22, 2026

A first in Southern New Mexico and a new beginning for patients: A cutting-edge option for high blood pressure is here.

Memorial Medical Center has marked yet another milestone in advanced cardiovascular care by completing Southern New Mexico’s first Symplicity Spyral™ Renal Denervation (RDN) procedure, an innovative treatment option for patients whose high blood pressure remains difficult to control despite medication and lifestyle changes.

Performed by Interventional Cardiologist Muhammad Fazeel Anwar, MD, this minimally invasive procedure targets overactive nerves near the kidneys that can contribute to hypertension — helping lower blood pressure without leaving behind a permanent implant.

Nearly half of U.S. adults have high blood pressure, and many continue to struggle to keep it under control. Of the U.S. adults who are aware of their hypertension, about 80 percent do not have it under control. For patients who have struggled to manage hypertension despite medication and lifestyle changes, this innovative option represents a significant step forward.

The Symplicity blood pressure procedure is clinically proven to help reduce high blood pressure, which can lower serious health risks. After mild sedation, the doctor inserts a very thin tube into the artery leading to the kidney. The doctor then administers energy to calm the excessive activity of the nerves connected to the kidney. The tube is removed, leaving no implant behind.

Together, the team at Memorial Medical Center continues to bring advanced cardiovascular care options close to home.

If you or someone you know has difficult-to-control blood pressure, talk with your doctor to see if renal denervation may be right for you.
