Memorial Medical Center is expanding the Primary Care Family Residency Program to Alamogordo, NM, with a projected start date of July 1, 2020. This will be the fifth Family Residency Program in the state of New Mexico. Dr. John Andazola, MMC Residency Director, and Shawnette Alford, GCRMC Program Manager will work together to launch the partnership. We are excited about working with surrounding communities in southern New Mexico to enhance their primary care services.

Memorial Medical Center has again been awarded an ‘A’ in Fall 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade™, a national distinction recognizing Memorial’s achievements protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care. The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization driven by employers and other purchasers of health care committed to improving health care quality and safety for consumers and purchasers. The Safety Grade assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to all general hospitals across the country based on their performance in pre-venting medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.

The first cryoablation of malignant breast cancer in New Mexico was successfully completed on Friday, October 4, 2019, at Memorial’s HealthPlex. In a joint surgery-radiology procedure between General Surgeon Kamran Kamali, MD, Memorial’s Chief Radiologist Rob Shoots, MD, and Memorial’s radiology team. This accomplishment not only supports Memorial’s mission of patient-centered care but also exemplifies the hard work and dedication of its medical team.

The American College of Radiology (ACR) has awarded Memorial Medical Center accreditation in breast ultrasound. Ultrasound imaging is a noninvasive medical test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of internal body parts to help physicians diagnose and better treat medical conditions. Ultrasound imaging of the breast produces a picture of the internal structures of the breast.
