November 10, 2018

Diabetes is one of the biggest health issues facing Americans today. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 30 million people in the U.S. have diabetes. That’s one in 10 Americans. And one in four of those who have it don’t know they have it. These are troubling statistics, particularly because diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S.

We will celebrate our first Bariatric Ball on Friday, October 26. The event will feature surgical weight loss patients modeling their new, healthy selves in fashions from Emerald Isle and Dillards. The evening will celebrate these patients who have used bariatric surgery as a tool to gain a new, fuller life. I couldn’t be more proud of Dr. Frank Felts and his team at Memorial Weight Loss Center for the work they have done to put together the region’s most comprehensive weight loss program. In just over a year, they received accreditation as a “Comprehensive Bariatric Center” from the national accrediting organization. Most of all, congratulations to these patients who have made such an amazing transformation! Please join us to celebrate their success.

According to the American Cancer Society, by the end of 2018, an estimated 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer will have been diagnosed in women, and about 63,960 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS – non-invasive and the earliest form of breast cancer) will have been diagnosed. With these estimates in mind, a woman currently has a 1 in 8 chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. These statistics continue to make breast cancer the most common cancer among women, second only to skin cancer.
