MMC partnering with new pathology services provider
March 29, 2021
On April 1, 2021, Memorial Medical Center will transition from our current pathology services partner, Pathology Associates, to Pathlink, LLC. MMC is indebted to Dr. Lopez and Dr. Topalovski for providing excellent pathology services, supporting our hospital, physicians and patients for over 30-plus years. Dr. Lopez has chosen to fully retire and Dr. Topaloviski will partially retire but will still be available on a part-time basis to continue supporting MMC.
Dr. Lopez joined the MMC team in 1988. In his 33 years of service, Dr. Lopez has provided expertise in the areas of anatomical and clinical pathology. He has functioned as the Medical Director of Laboratory Services for 14 years and was active in the Breast Cancer tumor board and the Cancer Committee.
Pathlink will be providing pathology services to MMC starting April 1. Dr. Robin Johnson and Dr. Luis Llamas will be permanently working at Memorial with support from Dr. Topalovski as well as support from additional pathologists working with Pathlink in El Paso.
Pathlink is a national professional pathology company providing pathology services to hospitals in the Northeast, North Central, Southern and Southwestern parts of the United States. They employ and contract with over 120 pathologists.
Two of the advantages Pathlink brings to MMC are:
1. The availability of additional subspecialty support for Dr. Robin Johnson and Dr. Luis Llamas. Pathlink currently employs pathologists with subspecialties in the areas of hematopathology, cytopathology, breast and gynecological pathology, pediatric pathology, and GI and GU. These subspecialists are available to further support patient care at MMC.
- Pathlink will bring telepathology technology to the campus. By attaching a camera to the microscope connected to a secure online telepathology system, Dr. Robin Johnson and Dr. Luis Llamas can share images of cases in real-time or in a photograph format to their peer subspecialists within the Pathlink network. This enables the subspecialist to read samples remotely and provide instantaneous feedback to provide real-time patient results.
Again, we thank our current pathology group, Dr. Lopez and Dr. Topaloviski for the many years of dedicated service and excellence they have provided to Memorial Medical Center.
