Memorial Heroes: Isaac Sanchez, Patient Account Specialist

October 23, 2020

What is your official title?

Patient Account Specialist at Memorial Radiation Oncology.

How long have you worked here at Memorial Medical Center?

I have worked at Memorial Medical Center for 9 years.

How did you come into this position?

I applied for a billing position here at MMC but I didn’t know I would end up in Radiation Oncology. I consider myself very fortunate that I did end up in my position.

What was your motivation for a career in Healthcare?

I followed in my mom footsteps as she has worked in healthcare since I was a child. I love helping people and I enjoy learning new things from others as it makes me a better person. I can then be more efficient and resourceful to others in the healthcare field and provide better quality care for patients and staff.

What is a typical day like for you?

Most days I am helping patients resolve billing issues, helping them get information they need for financial assistance as treatment costs are always on patients minds and that is the last thing I want our patients to worry about while they fight to beat cancer. I obtain authorizations for treatment and I also review all the daily charges to ensure billing is correct. I register all new patients and verify benefits and eligibility so I can discuss with the patient what the insurance is going to cover and what they will be responsible for and to let them know what discounts we can offer them to help lower out of pocket cost. There are days I may need to help my team assist patients from a vehicle to a wheelchair or if the elevator is not working help carry patients up the stairs so they can get their daily treatment. I can’t forget about meetings which involve leadership, department and facility which are all during the week. I can’t have a set schedule because at any moment things can change so I adjust myself to make things run as normal for our patients and the department.

How would you describe your role’s responsibilities?

My primary role here at the Cancer Center is to ensure the financial and billing aspects of the department are in compliance with all hospital policies and procedure. I am also responsible for explaining patient benefits for radiation treatment and collecting out of pocket costs for treatment. I am also responsible for updating the Radiation Oncology team on yearly updates that affect the way we charge and bill for services. I provide training and education to employees at the Cancer Center to ensure they are aware and follow all department and facility policies on the hospital billing systems.

In what areas do you help patients?

I help patients with insurance and billing questions and take time to explain the radiation treatment process from start to finish. I provide patients with requested financial and medical documentation. I also help our patient if they need directions because they are from out of town or if they need a wheelchair or help getting in or off their vehicle so they can come into the department comfortable before getting treatment. I offer any assistance to all patients no matter what they need and if I can’t provide what they need, I’ll find the right person they need to be in contact with to get what they need.

What are some of your interests outside of work?

My primary interest is spending as much as time as I can with my wife and 2 daughters.

I also have an interest in my daughter’s sports as they play soccer, basketball and softball and I enjoy going to their games and cheering them on. Hopefully we can get back to that one day but for now we just practice at home together. I also like working outside landscaping my yard so when I retiree I can enjoy it.I also enjoy 4 wheeling and off-roading in the mountains.

What is your favorite part about working for Memorial Medical Center?

I have a great team that I work with every day and we come to work with the same goal: to provide great quality patient care. I have an amazing director who supports my daily work efforts and helps guide me in the right direction when I need help or assistance. I believe and support in MMC vision, “Making Communities Healthier” especially our cancer center community because Cancer Center motto is, “We fight back” and I believe no one fights alone we fight together as team MMC.
