Taking Care of Your Mental Health During COVID-19

May 28, 2020

When it comes to protecting ourselves during the current COVID-19 pandemic, it can be easy to focus exclusively on physical health – making sure we are following CDC guidelines, practicing social distancing and doing everything we can to keep ourselves, our families and our communities safe and healthy. All those things are very important. But there is another important facet of our health that we should not ignore during this time – our mental health. National Mental Health Month is observed each May to provide a platform for discussing mental health and raising awareness of the important role it plays in our lives. This May, as we continue to navigate these unprecedented times, it is more essential than ever.

Memorial Medical Center (MMC) will receive one of three graduate medical education grants from the New Mexico Human Service Department (NMHSD). MMC will create a new general psychiatry program that will add three residents per year for a total of 12 new residency positions. Behavioral health professionals are an integral piece to providing safe, high-quality primary healthcare. We are honored to be selected and appreciate the opportunity to partner with the NMHSD in this vital program. Research shows 50-75 percent of medical residents stay within 100 miles of their residency program, therefore, investments yield significant returns for physicians-in-training, local economies and communities. The new psychiatrists trained through this program will help address a national shortage while improving the overall health of patients in our community. Also within our community, our partners at Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine will receive one of the other graduate medical education grants to expand their primary care residency program.

Starting Monday, May 18th, Memorial Medical Center will be taking appropriate steps to safely resume clinically appropriate elective and non-urgent surgeries and procedures that were previously rescheduled. The decision to reschedule procedures was made in accordance with federal and state guidance and intended to preserve critical resources in the event of a surge of COVID-19 patients in the community. Doña Ana County has experienced an extremely low prevalence of COVID-19 with less than a dozen people hospitalized at this time. Resuming these important services will be an essential component to meeting our community’s health needs. As this work gradually gets underway in our hospital, we will remain committed to preserving a safe, quality environment for all patients, providers, and employees.
