Our surgical team was the first to provide the most advanced cardiovascular surgery in southern New Mexico including the first in the state to offer "beating heart surgery". NMCVA's skilled team of surgeons each have over 20 years of surgical experience and extensive training in cardiac, vascular, endovascular, and pulmonary surgery. NMCVA offers new pioneering advanced technology for minimally invasive vein harvesting for bypass surgery and minimally invasive endovascular procedures for the treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) and peripheral vascular disease. Chest and lung surgery can now also be performed with minimal invasive video assisted technology.
About Our Medical Staff
Charles A. Dow, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Dow is a native Texan who completed his medical school training at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston where he was awarded membership in the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor society in1983. He then went on to complete his General Surgical internship and residency at The University of Texas Health Sciences Center in San Antonio. Following General Surgery training, Dr. Dow went on to complete his Cardiothoracic surgical fellowship at The Oklahoma University Health Sciences Center. In 1990 he started his private practice in El Paso, TX where he served as a surgical leader and associate professor in Thoracic and Vascular surgery at Texas Tech University Medical School. In 1996 Dr. Dow was recruited to Las Cruces, NM in order to develop and maintain a strong local Cardiac Surgical program -- the first in southern New Mexico. Since that time he has remained a pioneer and leader in cardiovascular surgery in southern New Mexico and is the founding member of the first cardiac surgical program in the southern part of the state. He currently heads New Mexico Cardiovascular Associates which he founded in 1996. Dr. Dow has led the development of two highly successful hospital based open heart surgical programs in Las Cruces, NM.
He was the founding member and chairman of the cardiovascular committee in Las Cruces, NM. In 1998, Dr. Dow was named to the "Best Doctors in America" list by his peers. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He has served as a hospital board trustee and remains an active leader in the surgical community. His interests include all aspects of adult cardiovascular, vascular, and thoracic surgery with a special emphasis on beating heart surgery, valve replacement and repair surgery, endovascular repair of abdominal aneurysms, and lung surgery.
D. Antony Hamilton, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. D. Antony Hamilton attended North Military George College, graduating in 1977 with degrees in Biology and Chemistry. He was a members of the Cadet Corps and served as Company commander his senior year while in college. Dr. Hamilton attended the medical college of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia and earned his M.D. degree in 1982. He attended medical college as a recipient of a Georgia State Scholarship given to outstanding students from rural areas in Georgia with high academic achievement.
Dr. Hamilton completed his surgical internship and surgical residency training from 1982 to 1986 at Charlotte Hospital/Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. He served as Chief resident in General Surgery from 1986-1987.
Dr. Hamilton completed both a vascular fellowship and cardio-thoracic surgical residency from 1987 to 1990 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. Under reknown heart surgeon, Dr. Francis Robicsek, Dr. Hamilton completed research and published with Dr. Robicsek a clinical report in 1989 on the use of pectoral muscle flaps for sternal wound closures on high risk patients.
Dr. Hamilton is a board-certified Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgeon. He joined New Mexico Cardiovascular Associates in September of 2009, specializing in open heart and off-pump beating heart surgery as well as minimally invasive chest and vascular surgery.
Dr. Hamilton and his wife Cynthia were drawn to New Mexico due to its exquisite Southwestern culture, beauty and climate. They have three children, Elizabeth, Tyler and Catherine. Dr. Hamilton enjoys spending time with his family, camping, hiking, biking, bird hunting, and trout fishing throughout New Mexico.
